Needle Felted Lady Gnomes

Meet the Lady Gnomes,
I thought up these gnome on a flight from Finland back to Canada. I had 13 hours to think about things I wanted to make! And I thought  Gnomey could use some family and friends. He's been living alone way too long.

I have no idea what I'm doing,
No, that's not a humble brag. I actually am just winging my way along. Many times I thought I should give up because they looked so weird but I kept at it. I clocked myself for one of them and it was over 13 hours, that's not including breaks! Every detail takes time and patience and 1000 stabs. In the end the cutest little faces appear and it was worth it!

I started each one with course, green polyfil. That stuff worked great. The color I added is wool roving . I also brushed cheap craft felt sheets to get some pink for the skin tone.
I love how they turned out but I don't like the arms and hands. I'll replaced them one day.

Gnomey is so happy to have a friend. Her name is Annie, I think it's love!

Aunt Katri,
It turns out the older lady is Gnomey's mother, I named her Aunt Katri after my real aunt in Finland who was born in 1913. You can read more about my aunt and see her picture here.

    1. no, just the pictures you see. I'm not great at needle felt and made many mistakes. I just winged my way along. I've only made 4 felted gnomes since 2013.

    1. I haven't needle felted any gnomes since I made these ones in 2015/2016. Have you tried looking up needle felting tutorials on youtube? Not sure if there would be anything there to help specifically for the skirts if you're trying to get a similar likeness of my gnomes. I was just winging my way along with them, I'm not skilled in working with wool woving at all, so sorry.
I do remember making fake folds on the skirts just by needling over and over, up and down in a line, until the line was indented and spacing out those indented lines so it looked like I had the pleated look. You can also add extra material in between the lines as you go to puff up the center of the lines creating a bolder pleated look. I wish I could offer you more helpful advice!
