Chair and Miniature Braided Rug

A Chair For Aunt Katri
The boys surprised Aunt Katri with a chair today. They figured they'd make her one since nobody knows when her furniture will arrive. It would be nice to be able to sit in front of the fire.

This was the first time the Gnomes ever made and upholstered a chair in their lives!

The how:

I made this chair out of foil covered in lots of masking tape. I love building stuff out of  foil, I can make any shape I want and it can be resized at anytime. It's a good alternative for me since I don't
use a scale for making miniatures and just go by eye and not a ruler.

After it was covered in tape I bulked up the arms and the edges with more tin foil and covered in tape again. That was the easy part. I was going to have more progress photos for you but by the time I started the fabric I was just trying to keep from ruining the chair so the camera got forgotten. I had a tough time, upholstery is a tricky thing. I made lots of mistakes!

I used a scrap piece of fabric but ended up not having enough to make the cushion (side note, make sure you have lots of the fabric, you'll be surprised how much you end up using) so I opted for the sheepskin. I think that turned out fine, comfy looking anyway. And the chair itself is surprisingly sturdy! It feels just like a wooden chair. I think the glue and fabric helped solidify it.

Now we need a rug!

A few days later the gnomes tried their hand at rug making. Aunt Katri was in desperate need of a rug since the floors are pretty cold in the mornings before the fire gets lit. They quietly snuck it in while she was sleeping.

Aunt katri was so surprised she dropped her cane! She couldn't believe what the boys had done. She had no idea they knew how to make rugs. She just couldn't believe it. Feeling so grateful she said,
Thank you my boys, thank you. You are so good to me!

It was harder than I thought,

I thought I would just crochet up a rug, I was wrong. 2 different times I had to undo and start again because I crocheted too tightly which made it buckle. Live, learn and 3rd time was the charm! When it was all done it was just just a tad wavy so I sprayed it with water and pinned it flat then left it overnight. It lays perfectly flat now.
